Alrbye Alddayim

Using hydroponics to enhance barley production

Location: Anbar

Host: Oxfam Iraq

Funded by IRIL

Alrbye Alddayim uses water plantation technology to produce green barely without the use of soil. The result is high quantities of green barely in short periods of time and a reduction in water waste.

The Problem

The challenges the project address are:

  • A lack of available green feed that is pesticide and fertilizer-free for cattle

  • The dangers of herding cattle in natural fields due to the existence of mines, and war residuals

  • Lack of land to use for crops and produce planting

The Solution

The innovation produces green barely without the use of soil. Instead, a water plantation technology is used which produces high quantities of green barely in short periods of time and to reduce water waste.

The benefits are:

  • Feed with high nutritional value for fattening livestock and increasing milk production up to 17%

  • Practical solutions for year-round livestock feed at relatively low cost

  • Free from agricultural pesticides and chemical fertilizers

  • Contributing to eliminating desertification and preserving natural pastures

Where is Alrbye Alddayim Now?

The enterprise is currently experimenting with a new model of management where a livestock breeder will be managing the unit and benefiting from the product produced. Al Rabye Al Daim is also continuing their effort in promoting the barley sprouting system with relevant government entities.
