Last year marked many successes.

The 2019 year was the Response Innovation Lab second year in operations. More innovations were piloted, several begun their pathway to scale. The Puerto Rico lab came on line. Deeper local and global partnerships were formed. Most importantly, vulnerable populations were positively affected in new and innovative ways, at a time when they needed it most.

A letter from our Global Director

Dear Friend of Response Innovation Lab,

Little did we know this first RIL newsletter of 2020 would be shared under such dramatic circumstances. I suspect that Covid-19 is the primary concern in many of our readers’ minds at the moment – it is for us. Currently, the Central Support Unit and the labs are mobilizing our growing resources to respond in the places where we operate and beyond. In the meantime, let us know if we can be of assistance, and I look forward to updating you on our efforts.

Today, I want to take this opportunity to highlight the work of our labs from 2019 and give thanks to our amazing staff, contributors, and partners that have helped us learn, grow, and deliver.

In the following email, you will read about the ingenuity of our labs to apply the RIL model of Convene-Matchmake-Support in the humanitarian innovation ecosystems we serve.  Together, we have identified nearly 2,000 actors and hundreds of innovations that have the potential to contribute to humanitarian responses, disaster preparedness, and long-term resilience programming in five responses, and even beyond. Our labs have helped more than a dozen innovators - particularly local social entrepreneurs - connect to funding opportunities, capacity, and technical support.  We have built stronger internal systems to support scaling RIL and it's a methodology through training packages, mapping tools, and toolkits. And, most importantly, we were able to address the critical challenges faced by affected communities post-disaster through testing and scaling innovative solutions.  I expect to see many of these investments support our work in 2020 and address our current global crisis of Covid-19.

In many ways, 2019 was the year that RIL became real.

As with every year, 2019 was also a time of transition.  We said goodbye to our Founder, Jennifer MacCann, and George Washington University (GWU), one of the founding members, as their Institute for Disaster Resilience (IFDR) closed.  The contributions of Jennifer and the team at GWU lives on at RIL, and we look forward to welcoming new people and partners in 2020.

I want to thank you again for taking an interest in RIL and urge you to engage with our team at the field level, our global Central Support Unit, and global partners - World Vision, Save the Children, Oxfam, and Civic.

Warm regards,

Max Vieille
Global Director, Response Innovation Lab
