Organisational Capacity Building

For Danish Refugee Council (DRC)

The collaboration between the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and the Response Innovation Lab (RIL) was designed to enhance DRC’s approach to innovation, addressing key recommendations from their Program Innovation learning review. The primary goal was to reinforce the service offerings of the Program Innovation and Business Engagement Unit (PIBE), focusing on innovation project design, scoping, and scaling successful initiatives.

  • Project Overview

Leveraging RIL’s extensive network with field-based labs, RIL assisted DRC in rethinking their innovation strategies with practical, user-centered approaches and early adoption of solutions. The support provided through this partnership included:

    • Kick-Off Meeting: Establishing the collaboration plan and objectives and for the two partners to align on strategic goals and expectations of the collaboration.

    • Innovation Basics Training Workshop: Design, Scoping, and Planning of innovation initiatives/projects through a series of interactive virtual sessions.

    • Scaling Workshop: Guiding the transition of successful pilot projects to scale.

    • Training-of-Trainers: In-person trainings for the Core Program Innovation Team with a focus on practical skills and strategies.

    • Mentoring and Coaching: Personalized support to advance innovation projects.

  • Partner Feedback

RIL conducted a post-training survey for the participants and received positive responses. The course was rated 4.13 (out of 5, 5 being Excellent) by the participants in its effectiveness in providing a comprehensive understanding of humanitarian innovation basics.

Some participants particularly mentioned how they benefited from the extensive scope of the training beyond innovation per se, such as “innovation mindsets”, “involving and consulting with different stakeholders“, etc. Participants also responded positively to the format of engagement with regard to “the exchange of ideas and experience across the participants and facilitators”.
