“Made by Yemenis”

Innovative Solutions for Humanitarian Impact

Made by Yemenis is an initiative that aims to empower innovators and changemakers in Yemen to develop locally led, innovative solutions to humanitarian challenges. Through technical support, mentoring, and opportunities to test and refine their solutions, the initiative seeks to strengthen local leadership and foster sustainable impact driven by communities themselves.

The initiative focuses on two thematic areas: Climate Adaptation and Sustainable Livelihoods and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). It creates opportunities for Yemeni innovators to bring their ideas, expertise, and solutions into the humanitarian ecosystem and contribute to addressing critical challenges in their communities.

Implemented under: Humanitarian System Transformation through Local Humanitarian Leadership (HST-LHL)
Led by: Oxfam in partnership with Response Innovation Lab (RIL)
Implemented in Yemen by: CPS Foundation for Development

What is this program about?

Made by Yemenis is designed to identify, support, and amplify locally developed solutions addressing humanitarian and community challenges in Yemen. The initiative provides a platform for Yemeni innovators, entrepreneurs, professionals, young people, and other changemakers to bring forward ideas that respond to local needs.

The initiative welcomes solutions at different stages of development, from early-stage concepts to solutions that are already being tested or implemented. Selected innovators receive tailored support to strengthen their ideas, develop their solutions, and explore opportunities for testing, learning, and further growth.

The 2026 initiative focuses on two thematic areas:

  1. Climate Adaptation and Sustainable Livelihoods
Supporting locally relevant solutions that help communities adapt to climate-related challenges while strengthening sustainable livelihoods.

  2. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
Supporting innovative approaches that address water, sanitation, and hygiene challenges and contribute to improved access, sustainability, and community resilience.

MISBAR – An Environmental Diagnostic and Early Warning System for Waterborne Epidemic Risks

How can communities detect water contamination quickly enough to prevent outbreaks? MISBAR combines preventive medicine and digital technology to address the risk of drinking water contamination caused by floods and the mixing of water sources with wastewater. The project uses a low-cost field kit based on Colorimetric Visual Detection to identify bacterial contamination, including cholera and typhoid pathogens and E. coli, within hours without requiring complex laboratory facilities. A connected smartphone application allows health workers to upload results with GPS coordinates, creating an interactive epidemiological map that can support proactive intervention and water disinfection.

Focus Area: WASH
A low-cost water-testing and digital early-warning solution designed to detect contamination and support proactive responses to waterborne disease risks.

MIZAN AI – A Smart Platform for Sustainable Water Services

How can digital technology improve the management and sustainability of water services? MIZAN AI is a platform designed to support water-service governance and management in Yemen by connecting field operations with a smart digital system. The platform documents well, pump, and customer meter readings through image capture and location and time data, while supporting offline operation and later synchronization in areas with limited connectivity. AI technologies are used to extract and verify readings, generate bills, calculate outstanding payments, and manage payments. The system also monitors water consumption, water-loss indicators, and operational and maintenance efficiency, while generating early alerts for potential risks and failures.

Focus Area: WASH
A smart water-services platform using AI and digital data management to support meter reading, billing, payment management, monitoring, and early risk detection.

SHIFAFA – A Community-Based Model for Turning Solid Waste into a Circular Economic Resource

How can communities turn the challenge of solid waste into an opportunity for environmental and economic benefit? SHIFAFA addresses the accumulation of solid waste and plastic containers in roads, camps, and local markets across rural districts in Yemen through a community-based collection model. The project establishes smart collection points where community members can bring plastic bags and metal and plastic containers in exchange for in-kind and monetary points that can be redeemed through local traders and environmentally friendly markets. By connecting waste management with economic incentives, SHIFAFA aims to support environmental protection, public health, and economic empowerment, particularly for women and vulnerable families in camps.

Focus Area: Climate Adaptation & Sustainable Livelihoods
A community-based waste collection model that transforms solid waste into a circular economic resource while supporting environmental protection and vulnerable communities.
