Poetherapy

Mental health support through an art program

Poetherapy stands for Poetry and Therapy. Poetherapy is a platform that aims at fighting depression and promoting sustainable mental health within the 18 to 25-year-old youth within Kampala and refugee settlements in Uganda. One of their key activities is to host shows where they provide performances of Poetry, Music, and Comedy to entertain, comfort, and create awareness about mental health.

To this end, Poetherapy hosted their third show under the theme “Life in this Century'' which took place on Friday 12th March 2021 at the Lazima Nipate Academy located in Nsambya.

The show aimed at:

  1. Discussing the mental health challenges related to the ongoing pandemic, and proposing the best coping strategies for it.

  2. Creating more awareness about mental health and depression through Poetry, Music, and Comedy.

  3. Providing some time for entertainment, relaxation, and fun to free the participants' hearts from stress, depression, and anxiety.

The team has been receiving increasing inquiries from youth interested in counseling to overcome stress. Poetherapy has so far supported 32 youth through their online counseling program by offering them a platform to share their stories and get comfort. Poetherapy is also connecting the youth to professional health workers to accompany them through their journey of recovery.
